Centros submits plans for Lancaster scheme despite protests

London-based developer Centros has submitted plans for a £150 million mixed-use scheme in Lancaster, amid the formation of protest and support groups.
The plans were submitted following discussions with the community, English Heritage and the government's architecture watchdog the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.
But the blueprint for the 500,000 square feet of shops and 179 homes has caused controversy, with protest group It's Our City and support movement Save Our City joining the debate.
The Castle View scheme in the Canal Corridor North area has been reduced in retail space by 14 per cent and the number of homes has been increased by 20 per cent.
It is anchored by a 97,500 sq ft Debenhams store, with provision for smaller local retailers.
The development is expected to open in 2012 if the plans are approved.
Centros focuses on sustainable, retail-led, mixed-use developments and has completed nine major schemes over the past decade.
